Earned resonance versus sequel bait

A redemption arc is only as strong as the damage it has to answer for. When a character spends three acts committing atrocities and the final act asks us to mourn them, the writing owes us a reckoning, not a montage.

Sequel bait works the opposite way: it dangles a familiar face or an unresolved thread so the audience returns for the question rather than the answer. Good sequels deepen what the first story built. Weak ones spend the goodwill in advance.

A good combat system can carry a lot; it cannot make a story’s unearned redemption feel earned.
